Why is SEO so important to businesses? What can you do to improve things?
Search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo help users find the content they need with incredible accuracy. For your website to be successful and enabling people to find your business quickly and efficiently your site needs to help the search engines job easier (SEO).
A Crawler searches the internet and its content to see what they can find. Anything that is discovered is indexed and shown to the users of that particular search engine depending on the searches made.
Once up and running, your site will be crawled and indexed in a matter of days and its content will be indexed and made available to the world to search upon.
Content is king!
It’s incredibly important to optimize your sites content correctly.
There are a number of ways to do this. A few examples are outlined below:
Using the correct keywords in your content is essential. You need to think about your business and how you would describe it, try to select a couple of keywords to use per page or if you want to use the same ones throughout your site that’s even better.
Write enough content
Ideally you should write over 300 words per page. Where possible try and use your selected keywords in the content you are creating. If your site has a blog, make sure you blog often using at least 300 words. The content needs to be unique – don’t re-use someone else’s content. Search engines are clever enough to spot reused items when posted, most will penalise you for this.
High quality code
Use semantic HTML mark-up for your content itself. This requires a professional developer or agency to get started, but it’s one of the most important ways of making the job of the search engines easier and it gives you a much better chance of getting a higher search ranking.
Keep your website up to date
There is nothing more damaging to a websites reputation than old outdated content! Search engines are clever enough to recognise that when they see that a site has not been updated in a long time, particularly if your site has a blog or news section that hasn’t been updated for a year. The more active your site is, the higher it will be in the search rankings.
If you can try and take on-board some of the ideas above, you will hopefully have a head start in making a success of your new or existing site. SEO is extremely important to any business with a web presence so try and implement it within your business.
