As more and more websites are created on the world-wide web, it becomes easier and easier for everyone to have a voice and a presence online.
However, with increased exposure also comes increased risk, as more and more websites become victims of hacking. Estimates put the number of hacked websites at around 37,000 per day and a large portion of these use a content management system like WordPress.
But doesn’t that mean that I shouldn’t use WordPress?
While a lot of hacked sites are running on WordPress, it doesn’t mean that WordPress isn’t secure. The percentage seems higher because a larger proportion of sites use WordPress. It is estimated that the total number of WordPress sites worldwide is close to 75 million. It is also believed that around 48% of all blogging websites are using WordPress.
Web security consultants Securi.net paint a positive picture of WordPress when managed correctly. Their web security report for Q1 2016 tallied nearly 9000 hacked WordPress sites, all of which were vulnerable not because of the WordPress software itself, but because of third party software that the site’s developer had included – Plugins.
So I shouldn’t use plugins on my website?
While plugins can cause vulnerabilities in WordPress sites, they are infinitely more secure when kept up to date. A standard WordPress site with CMS software and plugins left without updates for even a month can be ten times more vulnerable to hacking than if it had the latest versions installed. Many plugins can also greatly increase the security of your website, protecting it from exploits, patching vulnerabilities, or blocking malicious activity.
How can HW Technology help?
We are experienced in keeping WordPress sites secure and protected, as well as making sure everything is running smoothly. Our managed-update support packages take all the worry out of updates and security, leaving you free to focus on your business while being sure that your website is safe and secure.
We will keep your WordPress site and all of the plugins fully up to date, keeping your site’s security level high. The updates are applied manually enabling us to monitor any issues with incompatibility. If a problem arises we can provide a fix or roll back straight away. We research the compatibility of each update to make sure there won’t be any problems prior to applying to your live site. On completion we will fully test your site to make sure everything is as it should be.
By keeping WordPress and your plugins up to date and making sure that there are no problems when updates are applied, you can be safe in the knowledge that your site is always going to be secure, and is always going to be stable.
What about extra security?
We apply a suite of security software designed to keep your site safe, both on the site itself as well as on the server. We implement Google’s NoCaptcha ReCaptcha system to prevent automated programs, or bots, from trying to access your site. Our server firewalls make a note of any computer that accesses your site, and if they begin to act maliciously, they will be blocked. We also add your site into a security network designed to help protect against brute-force attacks – any site that is attacked within this network effectively informs all the other sites in the network, allowing them, and your site, to block the attacks before they begin.
