Hosted Email Issues – 123-Reg
The hosting provider 123-Reg has suffered issues with another of its hosted service provisions. This time the company reported a PITSTOP (partial inability to support optimal performance) of its hosted email systems. The latest issue seems to have occurred around the 17th May and saw a number of mail servers taken offline. The email problem seems to have affected customers for a few hours and caused issues with receiving incoming mail. This latest issue has happened soon after the well documented problems encountered with its VPS service where thousands of web servers were taken offline.
What else can you do for email hosting?
If you currently have hosted email services or are looking at the replacement of local systems, you have a number of options available for your email hosting. Our two preferred options are:
The provision of mailboxes on a privately hosted Exchange platform. This provides users with a mailbox (traditionally) via Microsoft Outlook, web mail and mobile email. This service may suit businesses who want to know exactly where email is stored and who has access to it. Backups and mail filtering are included as standard on this type of platform.
Office 365 provides hosted email with Exchange mailboxes on a public cloud infrastructure. The service provides all of the features of a privately hosted email system. The main downside is that email is stored on Microsoft’s public cloud platform which may be off-putting to some businesses.
Which one should I pick?
No simple answer can be given to this question. It depends on many things and a business’s requirements need to be understood. Both provide a good alternative to other cloud provisioned mail services and are also attractive for businesses which want to move away from locally managed email services.
The business needs to identify its key requirements and be able to identify why one system would be better for them than another.
